Royal Trinity Hospice's London Marathon 2023 page!

Story

It has always been a bucket list challenge to run a marathon to test my physical and mental strength. Turning 30 this year, I thought it was a good incentive to do, as well as to raise money for such a great cause.

I am honoured that Royal Trinity Hospice has given me a spot to run in Memory of Liz Harding, my girlfriends mother. Jess was only 25 at the time she lost her mum.

Background on Liz’s story:

In March 2016, Liz was rushed to St George’s Hospital whilst collapsing with shortness of breath to a point she couldn’t breathe at all. It turned out that the area around her lungs had filled completely with fluid, putting intense pressure on her heart and lungs. Liz was in intensive care fighting for her life. After tests of the fluid she was unfortunately diagnosed with Late-Stage Lung Cancer. For someone who had never smoked before this was a huge shock!

One year later in April 2017, after a long uphill struggle, she unfortunately passed away, with her family by her side. She battled incredible hard against this terrible illness showing spirit, courage and bravery.

For her final weeks Liz received palliative care at Royal Trinity Hospice in Clapham. She became so ill she needed 24/7 support, care and medication. The rooms overlook a beautiful garden and the nurses are all some of the kindest and most helpful people you will ever met. I have been a few times and I can’t believe how special the place is.

All their services are free of charge to patients and their families. This year, they need to raise over 11 Million pounds to deliver the outstanding care, and support through generous donations needed every year to continue their services.

Last year, Trinity cared for over 2,400 people at the hospice and out in the community.

They believe Hospice care is as much about living as it is about dying. They want all patients to make the best of every moment they have left. They continue to be there after death, for those close to them, providing specialist emotional and practical support, not matter their age.

Although I sadly never met Liz, this charity is hugely important to me, from the support it has given the Hardings.

I cannot wait to take on the challenge to cross the finish line in honour of Liz Harding and Royal Trinity. I know you will be there cheering me on.
