Story
Matthew was a fit and active 49 year old husband and father, enjoying a full family life and a successful career, when he was diagnosed with an inoperable cancerous brain tumour in early 2014. From one day to the next, his life, and that of his family, was turned upside down as he embarked on an intensive course of radio and chemotherapy.
Against all the odds, Matthew rallied and by the end of 2014 was able to start piecing his life back together - a different life, given that permanent paralysis of his right hand side and impaired eyesight meant he could no longer move freely or work. But one in which he was fully himself and able to enjoy his family, see his children grow into adulthood and take pleasure in his strong friendships.
That he was able to achieve this almost miraculous remission was due to the skill and professionalism of his doctors, his own strength of mind and the love and support of his family and friends.
But, by the middle of 2016, there were signs of the tumour returning, leading to a further long course of chemotherapy. Despite Matthew's immense bravery and quiet determination to triumph a second time over his illness, it proved impossible to reverse the course of this most implacable form of cancer. Matthew died peacefully, surrounded by his family, in June 2017, having displayed calm and dignity throughout his long battle.
Matthew's experience, like those of the many others who have suffered similar tumours, has underlined what a challenge this type of cancer poses. As a man who in life was clear minded and practical in his approach to problems, he will have wanted every effort made to improve understanding of brain cancer and how it can best be prevented, alleviated and cured. By raising money for the Brain Tumour Charity in his memory, this Just Giving appeal aims to support such effort.
