In mid-2018 I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease which would result in the need for an organ transplant to keep me alive. In the time that followed I was under the care of numerous different clinics across the country as I came to the end of my university career, moved home, and then started my first job in the Oxford area. This was an incredibly difficult time as I struggled with both the mental and physical effects of having organ failure. 

In September 2018 I came under the care of the Oxford Clinic and its charity, the 'Young Adult Clinic". The YAC is an innovative service which supports young people through diagnosis, treatment, transplantation and recovery. Through community clinics, peer support, social events, activity/sport trips and 1 to 1 support from a youth worker, the Oxford YAC reduces isolation, helps facilitate acceptance and builds the confidence of those with organ failure and transplantation. The YAC is truly one of a kind and I can say from first hand experience it is unique in its level of service and effectiveness. The YAC is not funded by the NHS and relies fully on donations to provide its amazing service to young people. 

At the end of January 2019 my wonderful mum donated one of her kidneys to me. I am now incredibly healthy, happy and raring to give back to the clinic that helped me through the most difficult part of my life. To me, it still provides a community and network of similar friends with organ transplants. Through this community and its sporting initiatives I have built back my confidence and fully accepted the challenges that I will face in a life with an organ transplant. 

To raise money for the clinic I am taking part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the worlds largest individually timed cycle race. This is an 109km race from Cape Town, down the Cape Peninsula to Cape Point on the Atlantic Ocean, and back to Cape Town. Your donations will go fully to the Young Adult Clinic and continue to help young people through educational and practical support.
