Story
My nephew Jamie had many of the same needs as any new baby but when he was born he had one major difference from most as he was born with a rare genetic condition which doctors were unable to diagnose.
Unfortunately in Jamie’s case this meant that he was always going to face a number of challenges which required him to have regular hospital attention.
At the end of June 2019, Jamie was admitted to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh where he was admitted to the High Dependency Unit and Intensive Care with breathing problems. During his time in hospital the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity funded parent’s accommodation which allowed Jamie’s mum and dad to stay at the hospital, go and see him whenever they liked and if they were needed, be right there.
The charity also runs a drop-in centre at the hospital where parents can take relatives for a cup of tea, they can talk to volunteer counsellors or they can go for some peace in a quiet space. While we often think of children being the focus of a hospital charity, the parents need looking after too.
Jamie faced those challenges before him with a strength and bravery that many of us would struggle to summon. The way that he continued to fight was an inspiration to everyone and something which made us as his family so proud. Unfortunately, the challenges eventually became too much and he passed away in August 2019.
So as we remember and celebrate Jamie, I am raising money for the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity to support children like Jamie and their families to make a hospital stay a less scary experience.
Please help me help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button.
