Story
Hey there! First of all, thanks for taking the time to come and check out my fundraising page! secondly, apologies for the rather long story your about to embark on but I feel the best way for me to promote what I'm doing is to lay it all out for you to see.. :)
So… Why am I climbing North Africa’s highest mountain (first attempt failed 600m short of the summit in April. September for round two) and running my first ever half marathon (which is also in September)
As with all my previous fundraisers, both my 3 day trek and marathon are self funded - 100% of donations will be sent to this amazing charity!
In January 2018 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. A brain tumour that I would soon learn had been missed 8 years before during a routine scan. The tumour was removed the following March with brain surgery (fun fact: you’re actually awake for brain surgery!) The first few weeks after surgery were incredibly hard as I had lost all strength on the left side of my body. Over the next few months I began to notice that my mental heath had taken a battering. Although I had recovered almost completely, the side effects of brain surgery were starting to take effect. I didn’t understand that I was now living with a brain injury. Thanks to the effects, I lost a lot of friends and became isolated.. In January 2019 - just a few days before I was due to fly out to volunteer in South Africa, I found out that I had a serious infection that I'd picked up after the brain surgery - resulting in me having to be sent back to surgery to have a large chunk of skull removed.
I was working full time - often 70/80 hours a week just to prove that I didn’t have a brain injury (spoiler alert, I had a brain injury) and by continuing to work in a high stress work environment (a homeless hostel) I was doing more harm than good.
It wasn’t until PAUL for brain recovery stepped in and offered me help, support and guidance that I truly realised I needed help and that I needed to step back. Had the charity not stepped in to help me, I strongly feel that I wouldn’t be here typing this up right now.
I’m now working in a job I love where I’m able to help support and motivate people in need. This charity quite literally saved and changed my life. This charity helps those in need day to day!
so far I have raised money for various charity's by completing the Hull 10k twice, hosting several coffee mornings, pie in the face raffles and being gunged (more than once!) completed Tough Mudders very own Unholy Grail (4 different types of Tough Mudder in 24 hours - including Europe’s Toughest Mudder!)
Thanks for taking the time to read this! :-)
