*******UPDATE*******
I did the 100K Para-row at Coombe Dean School in Plymouth on March 21st, which was also the first day of the 2014 Sport Releif weekend, and completed the row in 10hrs 19 mins 44 secs, which has been officially confirmed as a new World Record in my disability category. Thank you to everybody who has supported me in some way over the past few months.
*****************************************
This will be the 5th year I have undertaken some kind of sporting challenge since being diagnosed with a degenerative bone disease (Avascular Necrosis or AVN), which is slowly taking away the mobility in my legs as well as a liver disease shortly after.
In previous years I have made Wheelchair road racing a major focus of my efforts, dragging myself and a chair up and down the hills of Devon & Cornwall, over the last 18 months, I have gone into the disabled version of Indoor Rowing or Para-rowing if you prefer, I used to be a keen rower prior to becoming disabled but never really went anywhere with it.
Being disabled, in spite of its problems has also ha a positive effect on me, not least in how I view people and people who are in worse situations or circumstances than myself and what I can do to make just a bit of difference somewhere.
So, this time around I have chosen to help Sport Relief, the reason being that they to a lot of work to help women in the UK who suffer violence, domestic abuse, exploitation and suffer mental health issues
Overseas, Sport Relief works with women and girls, street children and those living in urban slums, and also contributes towards the efforts of people working on HIV and Aids, climate change and trade issues.
Sport Relief also helps young people dealing with mental issues, caring responsibilities and more, as well as helping older people living in poverty or are vulnerable or isolated.
.......So, to my challenge, basically to row 100,000 metres in one ay on March 21st at Coombe Dean School in Plymouth, it would be nice to set a new World Para-Rowing record over this distance, but to simply finish and raise a hatload of cash would be achieement enough
It will be a tough challenge, especially for someone with a bone disease and a liver condition too, who suffers a lot of physical fatigue, but bearing in mind the struggle some people face, it will be worth every single metre
