Story
Our first specialist nurse we fully funded was for NCCC Freeman Hospital seven years ago, since then we have funded a specialist nurse at Sunderland Royal Hospital, North Tyneside and Wansbeck Hospitals, Frairage Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gateshead. With over 150 types of blood cancer the knowledge and understanding the specialist nurses provide is phenomenal. We are very proud to be able to fund the nurses and we wish to continue funding more in the coming years.
Andrew Mason was a legend. A physical 'unit', a lover of life and a thoroughly decent young man. In his all too short time with us, he did a massive amount for others - from building a play area in a Kenyan orphanage, to rowing round the UK for charity. When denied the chance to try for selection for the Royal Marines, due to an ACL rebuild (rugby injury), he decided to prove a point by running 100 miles in five days with 50Kgs on his back - again, for charity. Despite all his strength - of character and physically - in 2006, he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Basically, cancer of the bone marrow. Rare and almost unheard of in someone of his age. The care and support he received from his specialist team at the Freeman in Newcastle was, in short, outstanding. The Brightred funded specialist nurses were his main point of contact - as they were for his family. Mere words can't describe how much help, advice and support they can provide to people like Andrew and those around them. We lost him in 2020. Their work goes on. Not possible without your help. Please support Johnny. As an ex-Royal Marine, he may not be running in Andrew's shoes, but he will be carrying the now infamous 'keg' - and that takes courage.
