I am an above knee amputee. I lost my leg to an aggressive form of bone cancer when I was  aged 17 in 1983. My cancer relapsed twice in my 30’s but against the odds I am still here forty years later.

I have always loved open water swimming and I have got together with a team of like minded amputees to undertake a swimming challenge. We are aiming to swim the North Channel from Ireland to Scotland as a relay team in June 2022. The North Channel is a harsh space of sea - it’s 21 miles across, cold, rough and with more than it’s fair share of jellyfish and the odd passing ship. The crossing has never been completed by a full para team before, so it’s a first too.

I am fundraising for Teenager Cancer Trust. I am passionate about supporting young people facing cancer. It’s a hard and lonely journey but TCT provide treatment and support in age appropriate environments with specialist care. In funding research and raising awareness, TCT also contribute to improving both rates and quality of  survival. Being a teenager is confusing and difficult at times- add in cancer, surgery, hair loss, impaired fertility, interrupted education and loneliness and it can be overwhelmingly scary.

Cancer made me courageous, resilient and determined. I think I will need a lot of these qualities to complete this swim challenge. I will be swimming every single stroke for young people who are facing the much bigger challenge of cancer.

Please support Teenage Cancer Trust by sponsoring my Bits Missing swim.
