**RUNNING GRAND TOTAL : £508.50**
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.
Over the last decade I have seen how this devastating disease has virtually destroyed my mother, causing myself and my family untold worry and stress.
Like many of her generation, Mum has met with tragedy several times in her life. At nine she lost her own mother to cancer. At fifteen she had to open the telegram which revealed her elder brother had been killed. A pilot/navigator in the RAF, his Halifax bomber had collided mid-air with another British plane. He was just 23 years old. Despite her grief and against her father's wishes, Mum joined the WRNS. After leaving to become a secretary, Mum started a family and was soon in charge of a rambling old house, three boisterous sons, a hands on husband and an untrainable dog. In her 50th year, she had to cope with the deaths of her father and then her husband, my Dad, within months of each other. After retiring from her school secretary job, Mum spent time teaching children with learning difficulties how to read. In her early sixties she battled through a mastectomy and triumphed over breast cancer.
Her mental strength was key to her winning through on all these occasions.
Sadly, this is the one area which Alzheimer's hits hardest. Mum now has virtually no short term memory. Conversation is impossible. Confusion is rife. Her awareness has been decimated. She no longer recognises her family or friends. She has no idea of the time, the day, the month or the year. She has delusions and hallucinations. She wanders around aimlessly. The list of symptoms goes on and they all add to her vulnerability.
We have now managed to place Mum in a home where she will be safe and well looked after and it's no less than she deserves. Now I feel is the right time for me to try and raise awareness of this terrible illness and generate some funds to fight it.
I am too clumsy to fall out of a plane and my last half marathon was nearly twenty years ago, so I have decided to put my knees through hell and walk the West Highland Way this August. The 95 mile hike will take me six days. I will be covering all my own costs, so all donations will go directly to The Alzheimer's Society.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Alzheimer's Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. Obviously, the total shown on this page will not include donations received via post and in person.
So please sponsor me now!
Many thanks for your support.
