Story

I'm running three different races this spring to raise money for Health in Mind.

  • The first is the John Muir Way 50Km Ultra-marathon on the 31st March.
  • The second is the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 5Km on the 26th May, with my son Caylin.
  • The third is the Edinburgh Marathon itself, on the 27th May.

John Muir Way Ultra 50K

This will be my first ultra-marathon. I have run three marathons before (but not since 2011) and since then I have passed into the "Veteran" category. But this is only 5 miles more than a marathon, so how hard can it be, right?  My goal here is to make all the way to the end, nothing more ambitious than that. Once that is over, I've given myself eight weeks to recover (it took me a week to be able to walk properly after my first marathon) and get back into shape for the other two events.

Edinburgh Marathon Festival 5K

For the past two years my son Caylin and I have run this 5K together. We have two goals: to beat our personal best for this race (just under 25 minutes last year), and to beat each other. Caylin is currently winning 2-0, but I think this might be my year...

Edinburgh Marathon

I've run the Edinburgh Marathon twice before, in 2010 and 2011. This year I want to beat my previous record for the race (4 hrs 26 mins), and I would really like to set a new marathon PB (4 hrs 5 mins).
