Project Trust is a registered charity which sends around 200 young volunteers abroad to 25 countries annually. It is widely respected as one of the most experienced and professional Gap Year organisations in Britain. Project Trust is special in that it sends volunteers abroad for a whole year to work in one place as they feel that this is the only way for a volunteer to really learn about and appreciate the local culture. It is also the most efficient way to really make a difference.
On my Gap year, I will be teaching maths and sciences to children in Guyana. Depsite being the only Latin American country to speak English, Guyana doesn't get much attention from the media. It was a British colony until 1966 and has suffered from years of mismanagement, lack of investment and population drain. The standard of education is very poor in Guyana as most of the well-educated and good teachers will move to the coast or emigrate out of Guyana, this means schools in the centre of Guyana are left with very few teachers and so it is hard for people in Guyana to get a good education. Secondary schools are Government run with limited facilities, poor quality wooden buildings and classes as large as sixty.
