Story
My name is Marta and on the 3rd and 4th of September I will be walking 100km (62.14 miles) over two days on the Southern Coast of England to raise money for Just One Ocean.
For those of you who do not know me, I grew up in Badalona, a Catalan city off the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Growing up, I never realised the immense privilege that it is to be able to dip your feet in clear blue waters whenever you please. I spent my summers discovering the wonders of the underwater worlds of the Catalan coast, and once the winter fell, I would marvel at the raging waters that splashed against the empty beach.
It’s been 9 years since I last lived in Badalona, and I miss the sea every day. Over the years, I have seen the beautiful beaches, ports and waters I once cherished so much slowly deteriorate and fall victim to the effects of global warming and our quickly growing societies. The sea is never as clear, calm or healthy as it once was before.
I am doing this challenge to hopefully raise money for this hugely important part of our - not green - but blue planet. The ocean covers more than 70% of the surface of our planet, and in this time of climate emergency, it has never been more important to draw attention and take care of our oceans.
About Just One Ocean:
Our mission is to raise the global awareness of the issues facing our marine and coastal environments in order to protect and conserve them for future generations. Just One Ocean has developed a number of projects to achieve this mission. We are currently undertaking and supporting scientific research in several disciplines, advising on community based programmes, supporting businesses and arts projects. The work we do is diverse, but so are the problems facing the ocean.
