Story
On 6th July, a group of hardy individuals - Fergy, Lance, Steve, Lee - will be competing in the legendary cycling Sportive called the "Marmotte".
This means 174km, with over 5000m of climbing - including the Glandon (1918m),the Telegraphe(1570m), le Galibier(2642m), and the famous 21 hairpins of the Alpe d'Huez(1880m).
We are, to say the least, a little bit nervous, but have been putting in the training since February, so hope to avoid the cut at the back of the pack and make it across the line without too much incident.
Our bikes are ready, Doctor's certificates signed, and final training plans are in place - so please dig deep for a worthy cause and a worthy event !
Why are we raising money for Brain Tumour Research...
On the 19th of August 2009 our friend's son, Taylan, passed away at the age of 7. He had been diagnosed with a very rare and inoperable brain tumour the previous year.
His parents, Andy and Figen, have founded Taylan's Project (http://www.taylansproject.com/ ) to commemorate Taylan's short and happy life and continue, with his legacy, to help others. As an umbrella group part of Brain Tumour Research, its aim is to raise awareness and much needed funds in order to help find a cure for this devastating illness.
More children and people under the age of 40 die of a brain tumour than from any other form of cancer. With more than 120 different types of tumours requiring different types of treatments, brain tumours are a notoriously difficult disease to diagnose and treat.
The fact that research into the cause of brain tumours is underfunded is heartbreaking and the progress is unfortunately very slow, with just 14% of sufferers surviving beyond five years (compared to over 50% for all other cancers). Brain tumours can occur in anyone but are increasingly affecting the younger population and we need your help.
It is a great cause, and something we continue to support. Thank you in advance for all your donations !
