We bring people together to build generational change.

Story

On January 18th, 2013 we travel to our placement as VSO volunteers; volunteering is something we have both been thinking about for some years, and now it looks as though it is really going to happen.

We are going to Gulu, Northern Uganda, to work with a huge vocational training programme.

Gulu is on a strategic cross-border transit route heading to South Sudan. It was the centre of the conflict between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan Government. The area was home to many Internally Displaced Peoples camps during the conflict. The northern region has been peaceful for around 5 years now and the context has moved from one of emergency humanitarian aid to developmentwork.

We will be working with the Northern Uganda Youth Development Centre, established in 2010 to provide opportunities to the many young people (aged 14-30) who were born in the camps and have not had much education, leaving them with very little to offer the labour market. The Centre equips them with appropriate skills (technical and life) to earn a living and live a decent life as responsible citizens.

The target numbers are:by 2015, 65,000 youth will be trained in basic literacy and core skills, 35,000 in vocational skills through service contracts with up to 50 vocational training institutes, a significant number of these will be supported in post training activities and 2,500 will be in meaningful employment or self-employment.
