We support innovative projects to accelerate African-driven conservation
Story
The fact that you have actually clicked through this far means that you are intrigued as to whether I am seriously running a half-marathon. People who know me well don't believe that i am capable of running a bath never mind 21kms at 5,500ft on a summer's day in Kenya..! They are probably right at the moment, but i am doing my best to train and get myself in some kind of condition to complete this, even if i am beaten by 1 or 2 Kenyans, who seem to think they are good runners as well.
Tusk is great charity that i have been learning a lot about recently - helping to protect the stunning African environment as well as offering the best opportunities for local children to receive a decent education, healthy food and the best chance in life.
As for this marathon - it is a serious personal challenge for me. i have always kinda wanted to complete a marathon but the closest I have got is watching it on TV. Until a couple of months ago I had not run for more than 20 minutes, so I have a lot to do... First step was to buy some shoes and an iPod, then I bought my flights so I could not back out. Now it is just a case of pounding out a lot of miles and staying sane...
As for the trip to Kenya - we fly out on 24th June to Nairobi, then a short flight to camp in the nature reserve, at altitude, where I acclimatise for a couple of days, sleeping in a campsite - ideal preparation I am sure. We visit a number of the local Tusk projects to meet the people we are trying to raise money for, which i am sure will inspire me when i hit 'the wall'. The race is at 7am on Saturday morning and I have been told it does't rise above 30 degrees till 9am, so good incentive to run fast (no chance). Then it is a day of recovery before coming back and taking a well earned break from the crash diet and stuff my face with ice cream (the biggest incentive!).
I hope to be able to share some amazing memories and photos with you after the race and it would be great if you could help me and Tusk by giving whatever you can. Any contribution is gratefully received.
