Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am climbing Everest to raise money for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund who assist the rehabilitation of wounded Royal Marines as well as the families of the deceased. As a serving officer between 1979 – 90. I have watched with unease at the number of young men and women who have been maimed or killed serving our country in Iraq, Kosovo, Iraq again and Afghanistan, not quite convinced we are looking after them as well as we should be.
Since climbing Kilimanjaro back in 2004 I became mildly fascinated with the whole subject of mountaineering and have read a number of books on the subject most of which have featured Everest. The fascination of it being the highest point on Earth has inspired a century of attempts, successes and disasters from all manner of adventurers. From the mystery of Mallory and Irvines disappearance in 1924, Hilary and Sherpa Tenzings first summit in 1953, to the 1996 disaster, The mountain and the famous parts, the Hilary Step, the South Summit, the Lhotse Face, the South Col and the Khumbu Icefield have become as much a part of history as geography.
On my expedition are a group of five injured army servicemen who are part of the Walking With The Wounded Charity which also organised the successful North Pole Expedition in 2011.
