ONE MILLION STEPS FOR NHS · 8 May 2020

NHS Charities Together and its members across the UK are hugely grateful for the support received from so many since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Ladies and gents, today marks the start of the hardest charity event I will ever attempt with funds raised distributed to NHS Charities Together.

I will be completing a sponsored walk of

ONE MILLION STEPS.

YES , you did read it correctly!

As we are on lockdown I am restricted to walking on the track by our house in Dinnet, Aberdeenshire.

To the bottom of the track and back is 450 steps and 0.2 of a mile for the round trip.

To complete ONE MILLION STEPS means (depending on the length of my step) I have to go up and down the track at least 2,222 times which is a distance of just over 450 miles, 225 of these are uphill (oh joy, can't wait for the hill!)

On a personal note, I watch the news each day in awe of the NHS staff who are literally putting their lives at risk with their vital contact with patients.

These members of staff, in some cases are living away from their families to avoid cross contamination of the Coronavirus.

One hell of a sacrifice!

On a side note, those of you who know me will be aware of my love of all things 'Butlin's'.

This virus has caused us (and most of the population) to cancel holidays.

My walk is 450 miles, which is same distance by road to Butlin's Skegness. Every step will raise money for NHS Charities Together AND take me closer to my 'happy place' of Skeggy. (we all need something!)

I am very happy to announce the generous support by Butlin's Skegness Resort.

For every 100,000 steps I complete, they will donate a number of family day passes to NHS staff who work in Lincolnshire for the 2021 season.

I will endeavour to persuade BBC Look North in Humberside to come up with a cunning plan to choose winners in due course. The amount of passes has not been confirmed at this time.

My long suffering wife Liz Robinson will help me with launching the justgiving link later today, along with something called Twitter and Instagram to help me 'get down with the kids'.

The NHS have helped me with my T2 Diabetes and constantly tell me I should do regular exercise. I think I'm okay for the moment 😉

My plan is to do the walk in two hour / 14,000 step sections with a break in between. I'll do this around things like having tyres fitted to my car later and shopping tomorrow etc, so the two apps on my phone will keep me right, and maybe after dinner I can relax with another couple of thousand steps.....

If my work calls me back before I've hit the ONE MILLION STEPS, I'll continue before, during and after work until I complete the walk.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

I'll finish if I may with my favourite Sir Winston Churchill quote:

''Never, never, never give up''.

I won't.
