This year, I'm using Movember to raise money for the Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow, in memory of a man who was a huge influence on my early backstage career in Glasgow.

I worked backstage for Ian on more than 25 different shows, in venues such as The Kings, The Theatre Royal, The Crawfurd Theatre and The Mitchell.

Ian was also my Stage Manager for three shows that I directed.

He was, quite simply, one of the nicest people I have ever known, who always made sure that both "new" and "old" Stage Crew felt like vital members of the team, as well as ensuring that those who were performing on stage never forgot just how important the backstage people are!

He was influential in shaping my thinking both as a DSM and as a Director - and having Ian as my SM meant I never had to worry about anything technical as he would have it under control.

Ian battled with his illness for a number of years, but he was always wanting to talk about everyone else rather than himself.

In short - he was a lovely man, with a wicked sense of humour - forever teasing me about my love for Party Rings...!
