Story
This will be my 5th attempt to get to the start line of the London Marathon let alone complete it and I am more determined than ever to succeed. Previously I've had to contend with a calf injury, a hip injury, a back injury and in 2020 I was 8 weeks away from running it and Covid struck and it got cancelled. I had the option to run it the last 2 years but decided this year would be a good time to run it as I will have just turned 50 (what a stupid idea...!) Anyway, here we are and below is why...
Today, more than 55 million people around the world are living with dementia and a new person develops dementia every three seconds. Unless a cure is found, one in three people born today will die with dementia.
My Dad was one of those people. He had been suffering from this horrid disease for a number of years before he died a little over a year ago. Before he started suffering with Dementia he had been a bright, capable fun loving husband and Father who enjoyed sport, gardening and completing tough cryptic crosswords that I have no hope of ever doing. By the end, he had lost the ability to speak and couldn’t carry out the most basic of functions including dressing and feeding himself. He was 100% reliant on my Mum to care for him.
