Story
Three years ago, as most of you will know, I ended up having a triple heart bypass at Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital - no surprise really, I suppose, given that I hadn't done a jot of exercise since leaving school (and, having also stopped commuting, I wasn't even getting my daily work-out walking up and down the hills of Lewes on my way to and from the train station). Anyway, last summer, after spending a couple of years dutifully attending the twice-weekly cardiac fitness classes run by FitClinic, Sussex’s community-based cardiac exercise specialists, I joined with a bunch of fellow ex-heart patients cum FitClinic regulars in attempting to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge, ie. climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland – namely Scafell Pike (3,206ft/978m), Mount Snowdon (3,560ft/1085m) and Ben Nevis (4,406ft/1344m) – all within the space of just 24 hours. Needless to say, we failed! Not entirely our fault, since, although we managed to climb both Ben Nevis and Mount Snowdon (admittedly pretty slowly), we, along with several of the other slower teams, were banned by the Challenge organisers from even attempting to approach Scafell Pike because of severely adverse weather conditions on the summit. So this May I'm going back to the Lake District to attempt to complete the Challenge by scaling the Last Peak all on my own (or rather, not quite on my own, since Katie is coming too, but you know what I mean). It may not sound quite as impressive as scaling all Three Peaks within 24 hours, but managing to complete the set within 12 months will do for me - and, since I'm doing it, I thought I might as well try to raise a little more money for the Sussex Heart Charity, which helps support cardiac care throughout the county, providing funding for equipment, education and research, supporting Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation classes and delivering community resuscitation courses across the whole of Sussex. So do, please, have a heart and help me out – it’s a really worthy cause! (Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
