Story
Growing up in the 1980's my best friend, also called Mark passed away through bone cancer. In 2008 my son Jack was diagnosed with the same osteosarcoma and I was shocked and scared to find out that the treatment and the outcomes had changed very little in the preceding 20 years with only a 50%, 5 year survival rate and a brutal regime of chemotherapy and operations that last over a year.
All cancer is terrible but these types of bone cancer mainly affect young people in their teenage years, robbing them and their families of time that should be full of fun and excitement and in many cases any future at all.
Thanks to the skill and dedication of the Doctors and Nurses in Switzerland where we were living at the time as well as the courage and determination from Jack to never give up, his treatment was successful and today he is happy and healthy, living his dream working in the forests of Scotland.
In 2010 after his treatment I decided to run the marathon in Luzern to raise money for Bone Cancer Research as this type of cancer receives very little public funding and any improvements in treatment and outcomes need to be paid for from individuals and charities. Many of you generously supported me then and we raised a substantial sum of money.
Unfortunately today in 2024 the outcomes for bone cancer patients are unchanged with still only a 50% 5 year survival rate which is even lower if the disease is not caught early so I have decided to get my running shoes back on and run the 2024 London Marathon.
I would really appreciate it if you could support me once again with a donation however little or hopefully large to help find a cure for this terrible disease.
Thank you so much !
