Story
The modern-day profession of news journalism has never before involved so much personal risk. Journalists continue to play a critical role in delivering first-hand accounts of conflict, bearing witness to human suffering, holding power to account, and exposing important developments to an international audience.
However, there is an ever-increasing reliance on freelance journalists, who often have a prolonged exposure to risk in relation to that of their ‘staff’ counterparts. Many do not receive the same level of training, support or have the same access to resources, which can often increase the risk to those deploying to areas of conflict. Therefore, freelance journalists, are at a greater risk of being seriously injured, threatened, imprisoned, detained, forced into exile or killed as a result of their work.
The Rory Peck Trust is the only charity dedicated to the support, safety and welfare of freelance journalists worldwide and aims to provide dedicated training and support. Please support their work and freelance journalists worldwide, thank you.
