Story
The QNI which was found in 1887-89 is an amazing Charity, with Her Majesty the Queen as its Patron. The Charity provides people with the best possible nursing care, by the right nurses with the right skills, in homes and communities, whenever and wherever it is needed. It is "District Nursing" in its best sense. When services are stretched, these nurses provide indispensable care for people at home and other vital services. Their help is often understated, but they are the nurses that many rely on for basic requirements of life and care. Among other things, the QNI provides community nurses with educational grants, financial assistance, as well as a telephone befriending service to retired community nurses.
District nursing’ began in England in 1859 when William Rathbone, a Liverpool merchant, philanthropist and later an MP, employed Mary Robinson to nurse his wife at home during her final illness. After his wife’s death, he retained Mary Robinson’s services so that people in Liverpool who could not afford to pay for nursing would benefit from care in their own homes. This was the starting point for the founding of the QNI in 1887-1889 with a model that has been replicated across the country.
The Philip Goodeve-Docker Memorial Prize that was set up was to Award the top performing nurse from across the country. Each year, every university in England, Wales & Northern Ireland is invited to nominate one person who shows the most outstanding achievement. The award is a huge achievement and is highly regarded.
This run is longer than anything that I have done before and this a very special Charity for me both for my brother's memory but also for my Grandfather who was the Treasurer and a Trustee for many years.
Dig deep & be generous as this run is probably going to break me!!!
