Story
Just a quick update for everyone, we took a group decision to set back the Hadrians Wall walk as we felt that the weather had been too extreme on an evening to complete. We have now decided to set it back a couple of months. As soon as we find out when we will be doing it I will update, Thanks again for your support
Three friends and I (Adam Jenkins, Dave & Mat Holt) have decided to embark on a few challenges this year in aid of charity, my chosen charity is Cancer Research.
First up on our Challenge list is walking the full length of Hadrian's Wall from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway over Easter weekend. It's 84 miles long and we aim to complete it in no more that 5 days, camping along the way.
Like many people around the world, my family & friends have been directly affected by cancer. Seeing how this changes people’s lives for the worse, I would like to take this opportunity to play me part in trying to help give cancer the boot!
Our Expedition was thought up by Adam, who has been suffering from a crippling back injury for the past 18 months. Now that he is on the road to recovery, he has written a list of challenges that he’d like to complete. (THANKS ADAM!!!) J
This will be a tough challenge for us all as I’m sure the elements will play their part, so dig deep and please help me raise as much money as possible for what I’m sure you’d agree is a worthy cause!!
Here’s our itinerary
Thurs 28 March - Day 1: The starting point is at the Roman fort of Segedunum (near the Swan Hunter shipyard). The first day is spent walking through urban areas, including through the centre of Newcastle, and along the banks of the Tyne. Only the last part, leading to Heddon-on-the-Wall, is in open countryside. There are occasional glimpses of the actual Wall along this route. And just a couple of miles past Heddon is Harlow Hill, where we will set up camp after a long days walking.
Fri 29 March - Day 2: We will be walking from Harlow Hill to Humshaugh. This section is almost entirely through open countryside. The Wall is occasionally visible and the Vallum (earthwork) is frequently visible on the south side.
Sat 30 March - Day 3: Humshaugh to Greenhead. The path starts to rise now and the countryside becomes moorland, rather than farmland. This is one of the best (and most strenuous) parts of the walk. Much more of the Wall is visible and parts of it run along the edge of crags, giving superb views over the open countryside to the north. The Pennine Way long distance path joins the Hadrian’s Wall Path near the village of Greenhead.
Sun 31 March - Day 4: Greenhead to Carlisle. This is another excellent section across open countryside with the Wall occasionally visible. As we approach Walton, the path returns to farmland and crosses the M6 motorway. Part of the path is alongside the River Eden, passing through a pleasant park and over a large footbridge.
Mon 1 April - Day 5: The last leg of our journey will be from Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway. The first part of this section is rather boring but the walking improves once the path gets beyond the outskirts of Carlisle. Most of the path runs alongside either the River Eden or the Solway Firth. There is nothing of the Wall to be seen but the walking is open and pleasant. The path ends in the village of Bowness-on-Solway
