Walk for Skin 2010 · 23 May 2010
On Sunday 23rd May 2010 I will be taking part in the Walk for Skin organised The British Skin Foundation in aid of the Ichthyosis Support Group (www.ichthyosis.org.uk).
Ichthyosis (pronounced ICK-THEE-YOSIS) is a very rare genetic skin disorder distinguished by scaling of the skin. There are many different types of the condition which vary in severity from the most severe Harlequin Ichthyosis to the more common Ichthyosis Vulgaris. Ichthyosis in most cases covers the whole body. The skin of an Ichthyosis sufferer is also very thick on the joints, which can restrict mobility, skin on other parts of the body is very fragile some may describe it as being similar to tissue paper. Skin can also be very tight, and in some cases blistering occurs. The skin is also shed rapidly. Overnight, a sufferer of Ichthyosis sheds the equivalent of what a person with 'ordinary' skin would shed in 2 weeks. There is currently no cure for Ichthyosis, just treatments and your donation will contribute to the support offered by the Ichthyosis Support Group for individuals and families who live with an Ichthyosis condition. Your donation will also help to fund research into further treatments.
I am taking part in this walk as my daughter-in-law has this condition (of the Bullous form - meaning blistering as well as the usual characteristics associated with Ichthyosis). I want to help contribute to the work of the ISG and funding into research for the condition and hope you will help me to achieve this goal by showing your support by way of sponsorship/donation via this page.
