My name is dr Marie. I am employed as a project facilitator and development officer at Quetzal, a charity supporting female survivors of childhood sexual abuse in their journey towards recovery.

My main purpose at Quetzal is to raise awareness about our cause and raise funds so we can continue providing FREE counselling to women aged 16 and above living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

In a previous life, I was all about the repair of electrical items and Leicester Fixers, then I pondered upon the violence targeting women and thought that I could use my skills and experience to support a cause that tackles the worst betrayal of trust.

I was recruited to deliver the Breaking the Silence Initiative 2019-2022, a project that aims to measure the effectiveness of a community-based approach to raise awareness in South Asian Communities in Leicester. In 2019, we received a total of 11 referrals, in 2021, I am pleased to say that we received 52 referrals from women of South Asian background. The number of referrals across our charity keeps on growing from 261 referrals in 2020-2021 to a projected 393 for 2021-2022.

Quetzal is an incredible charity that supports its staff and its beneficiaries in growing and becoming more confident within themselves and more importantly trauma-informed, so they can better deal with the impacts of any abuse they've experienced, pursue their goals and create a better life for themselves and others.

I am running for Quetzal because I truly believe that they help people in their decision to change their lives for the better and I truly believe now more than ever that if I put my mind to it, I can achieve anything... Yes, I CAN RUN the London Half-Marks half-marathon!
