Our Story
For months Pauline complained of stomach pain. Her doctor kept dismissing her complaint as IBS. It was late on a Sunday afternoon that Pauline found her stomach pain getting worse. She drove herself to Southampton General Hospital where on Friday 31st August 2009 Pauline was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
A week after diagnosis we spoke to a specialist at the hospital were we found out that Pauline's Cancer was in fact terminal and there was not much they could do to help her.
Even being told of the Cancer and having to face the fact it was terminal, Pauline stayed extremely strong and positive. She still had a smile on her face and still managed to laugh and joke.
Pauline left the Hospital a few days later to go and stay with her sister Carol and brother in law Alan who did a wonderful job in looking after her and made sure she got the rest she needed. Another of Pauline's Sister's, Gillian, made her a handy bag which held her Medication pump, thus meaning she could move around more comfortably. Even the nurses at the hospital said what a help it was. As John, Pauline's husband, has another terminal illness, Huntingtons Chorea, there was an awful lot of pressure on the family but by sticking together and rallying around we tried to make the best out of a terrible situation.
Soon after this, Pauline was informed that the cancer had spread to her Liver and was extremely aggressive. On Monday 14th September 2009, Pauline started her Chemo treatment to try and reduce the cells found on her Liver. Even on this day Pauline still was very upbeat and determined to fight.
After a couple of weeks Pauline had become very ill and needed to go back to hospital. On Monday the 19th October 2009 nurses told us that this situation was now in the worst stages. Pauline was moved to a private room and our family stayed there the night as we did not want to leave her. This was the same again the next day.
On Wednesday 21st October we were told that Pauline was being moved to Countess Mountbatten House. She was overjoyed to be told this as it was where she wanted to be. This is a place for Cancer patients to go to have one to one care and to be looked after more thoroughly. We had arrived at CMB in the afternoon and the nurses made Pauline and our family very welcome. After filling out some details staff told me and Mike (Pauline's Son), that we were welcome to stay that night . That night we each gave her a kiss and said Goodnight, she replied Goodnight, Love You.
Thursday 22nd October 2009.
A Nurse woke us up early that morning. She had said how Pauline had slept very well. Then it was that horrible pause when she then said, " I am so sorry, Your Mum has passed away."
Pauline had suffered a massive Haemorrhage, and had passed. Immediately we went to see her. Pauline looked so peaceful. Finally this pain for her had ended. Mike phoned his family and told them they needed to come to the Hospital.
Although Pauline only had a very short stay at Countess Mountbatten, the team there did so much in helping her. They really did do a fantastic job and were brilliant in her Privacy and care. Our Family Would like to give a special
THANK YOU to all staff at Countess Mountbatten for all they did.
We are wanting to raise funds to aid the research into Pancreatic Cancer as it is the least funded treatment. Please help us to help other families who are going through this terrible suffering.
