Every 3.5 seconds, someone in the world dies of sepsis. In the UK alone, 44,000 people lose their lives to sepsis every year. This is more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined. Globally, sepsis claims 6 million lives a year. Yet with early diagnosis it is easily treatable.
The UK Sepsis Trust exists to fight this life-threatening condition, stop preventable deaths and support those affected by sepsis.
A bit about Margaret's battle with sepsis...
She had been receiving radio/chemotherapy at Guy's Hospital as an outpatient for a number of weeks and then following treatment was admitted to the hospital. The original reason for her admission was low sodium levels, but she was also struggling with the side effects of the radio/chemotherapy. With a weakened immune system she contracted a few infections during her weeks in hospital which were all successfully treated until the 9th November when one infection took over and she developed sepsis.
Once contracting sepsis her prognosis was very poor – the doctors gave her 48 hours to live. A week later she seemed to be making a slight recovery and we hoped she was managing to fight the infection, although the doctors still had a very gloomy outlook. The infection unfortunately took hold again and they discovered there was a small perforation in her gut wall which meant that the infection could keep refuelling itself. Two weeks after the sepsis was diagnosed the doctors decided all treatment should stop. Margaret still battled on for a week but eventually the inevitable happened and she passed away three weeks on from the initial sepsis diagnosis.
