Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I will be attempting to walk from my house in Matlock to the top of Mam Tor (near Castleton) in one day! The journey is just over 28 miles and will take me through some incredibly scenic areas in the Derbyshire Dales and into the heart of the Peak District. But there will be no time for admiring the scenery! By my reckoning the journey should take me around 10-11 hours. I'm planning to set off at 7am and reach the top of Mam Tor by 6pm. The proposed date is Saturday 26th May (health permitting).
For those of you that know me, you will know that I'm not the fittest of people! So this is a big challenge for me! I will be undertaking practice walks, weights, and cycling over the coming weeks to get myself ready for the big day.
I have suffered with Meniere's Disease for the last 7 years. The condition causes severe attacks of vertigo (where your world tips upside down and around and around...) that can last hours, permanent tinnitus and hearing loss in the affected ear. On top of all of this it affects your confidence, your ability to function, your mood and your relationships with those around you. I am lucky, in that I have my condition relatively under control (for now). However, there are thousands of people in the UK whose lives have been ruined by this incurable disease.
Very little is yet known about the causes of Meniere's. Nor is there a truly effective treatment available yet that works for everyone. Therefore, a lot more research is needed. The Meniere's Society funds research projects and gives vital support and advice to those people with Meniere's Disease and any other vestibular problem. They were an incredible help to me in the early stages.
