We fund lifesaving research to tackle heart and circulatory diseases

Story

Around this time last year I was diagnosed with an atrial fibrillation.

AF affects people in various ways: in my case it manifested as a high and irregular resting heart rate. While never life threatening, the condition did leave me short of breath, drained of energy and curtailed my ability to exercise - particularly frustrating as I had recently re-discovered an enjoyment of road cycling (the cardiologist assures me it's not linked!).

To cut a long story short, I underwent two separate cardio-versions (a procedure where the heart is stopped by electric shock and - in theory - restarts in a normal rhythm); neither of which worked, so the decision was taken in February to undergo an ablation. This is moderate heart surgery which thanks to the wonders of modern technology is carried out via catheters inserted into the femoral artery and vein at the top of the leg (I'll spare you any further gory details!).

The good news is that after four months the condition seems to have been resolved; my heartrate is at close to normal levels and I have been able to return to the bike (with the doctor's blessing!) for reasonably lengthy rides including a couple of sportives, all of which has shown that even under those conditions my average and maximum heartrate are at much more acceptable levels (a fact I can confirm as I feel considerably better at the end of a long ride!).

My next challenge is the London to Brighton Night Ridehttp://www.bhf.org.uk/get-involved/events/bike-rides/london-to-brighton-night-ride.aspx which I have entered with my son Richard for moral support. This takes place over the traditional London to Brighton route but at night (strangely enough) on July 13-14. It is 60 miles which I am by no means guaranteed to complete. The ride is organised by the British Heart Foundation, so as well as taking on a personal challenge it gives me an opportunity to raise funds for this very worthy cause linked to my condition.

The aim is to raise a modest £250 overall, and I would very much appreciate any kind donations.
Best wishes

Marc..
