Story

I joined Bynea Cycling Club just over 2 years ago with very little cycling experience. I was welcomed with open arms and encouraged from the very beginning.  This last year has been especially hard for the club after very much loved members sadly passed away.

I have wanted to give something back to the club as a form of thank you for the guidance, advice, help, and friendship I have received over the years. I would never have been in a position to attempt the Everesting challenge without my club’s support.

One of our members who often kept me company on the back of the club run on the climbs in the early days, put forward the club’s charity Wales Air Ambulance after his 6-week old granddaughter was airlifted to hospital. His passion for the Air Ambulance and the work they do was undeniable.

Wales Air Ambulance Charity is funded by the people of Wales and requires £6.5 million a year to keep its four helicopters in the sky, serving Wales and saving lives. The charity can be anywhere in Wales within 20 minutes, its doctors and medics fly the A&E deptartment to the patient. It also runs the Children's Wales Air Ambulance service, transferring vulnerable babies and children to the specialist hospitals across the UK.Your donations will help keep this vital service in Wales.

I am now in a position to not only say thank you to my cycling club for their influential and integral part in my cycling journey by supporting the club's nominated charity, but also raise awareness and funds for a truly incredible cause. One that has affected many of our members.

I will be attempting the Everesting challenge on the 25th of July on the Bynea Cycling Club hill climb course in Trimsaran.  The climb is nearly a mile long with an average gradient of 9.2%, I will need to climb it 77 times to reach the elevation of 29,029ft / 8,848m.  The climb is especially relevant to me as not only is it the Bynea Cycling Club hill climb time trial, but also because I avoided riding it for so long.

About the charity

The Wales Air Ambulance Charity provides advanced life-saving emergency care for everyone in Wales, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We are a ‘mobile emergency department’ that relies entirely on donations to keep our helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road.
