Story
In Memory of Audrey Mary CLARK, nee Mills.
Born 1st February 1938, Died 31st October 2014, Aged 76 years.
Audrey was a loving mother to Mandy and Suzanne , and Nan/Grandma to Edward and Scarlett. Audrey died after a long but tremendous nine year battle against Cancer. She was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, then went through several operations (including plastic surgery), having her lymph nodes removed, and in 2012 (on her 75th birthday) being diagnosed with angio sarcoma. Angio sarcomas are rare cancers of the inner lining of blood vessels. They can be aggressive and difficult to treat due to metastasis through the bloodstream. She showed tremendous courage and a will to live in fighting this cruel disease several times before eventually falling to its ravages, surrounded by the people she loved.
Audrey was known locally as ‘Nanny Audrey’ to many people she knew. Aside from her family and close friends, she will also be especially missed by those she came into contact with from Benfleet Running Club, where her presence, smiling face and wonderful personality lit up Thursday club run nights where Audrey kindly gave up her time to feed and water her running family. She was particularly famed for her fabulous Bread Pudding!
Audrey was a regular walker with the Ramblers group for a long time and was still getting out until quite recently. She rarely missed a Tuesday walk and was very popular with everybody.
Despite the obvious toll and serious impact this long illness took out of Audrey she will be fondly remembered for her happy-go-lucky attitude and fondness to live life to the full with a cheery smile on her face. She never complained about the obvious pain she was in until the last week or so of her life, always sought to put others before herself and struck a wonderful accord with all those she met.
The family ask that if people wish to make a donation in memory of Audrey, that they kindly make this to Sarcoma UK, to both help raise awareness and to provide funding to help towards eradicating this terrible disease.
You can do so online via this page or cash donations via Benfleet Running Club on race nights (Tuesday and Thursday nights @ 7:30 pm). Or direct to Mandy.
The family would also like to thank the wonderful messages of sympathy and support given to them through what is obviously an incredibly difficult time for us all.
RIP ‘Nanny Audrey’ xxx
