On October 16th 1996 my youngest son Louis was born. He was gorgeous, blond hair and blue eyes. Dressed in white he looked like an angel.
It wasn’t long before it became apparent not everything was well. Eventually we were told Louis suffered from Myoclonic epilepsy.
Although there are many different types of epilepsy, some of which only last a short time, others which are treatable and controllable, Louis’ epilepsy was never controlled. And he suffered. And we suffered, watching him helplessly whilst this awful condition took over his life. As a baby/ toddler we saw everything he learnt one day, wiped out the next through his seizures, until eventually he no longer tried to feed himself or pull himself up. He spent so much of his life in hospital, either having tests or because he was so ill. So many times we feared he would die.
However he was an amazing little boy and as soon as he had a clear spell he would sing happiness and we would all be happy for a too short a while. Anybody who took the time to give him a cuddle would feel his special peace. He loved his older brother, playing with children, and his dad playing music. He loved all the people that helped to look after him and his pony Rollo at Riding for the Disabled. And so many people loved him back, but all the love in the world couldn’t save him.
He died on August 23rd 2005, a sudden and unexpected death, caused by epilepsy.
Louis was 8 years old.
In memory of Louis I will be trekking through Jordan this October to raise funds for Epilepsy Action, a charity that aims to improve the quality of lives of people with epilepsy through: phone help lines; online community; conferences; publications; providing information for all; campaigning to improve understanding of epilepsy and raising standards, as well as helping to fund research into epilepsy. They can be contacted at www.epilepsy.org.uk/
Trek Jordan is from 13-17th October 2011. Jordan is mainly desert and temperatures are expected to reach around 30 degrees centigrade during the day and around freezing at night. We will trek for about 8 hrs a day, and sleep in Bedouin camps for 2 of the nights.
I will pay all travel costs and expenses myself so every penny raised in sponsorship will go directly to Epilepsy Action to support their work.
Please support me.
Thank you.
