Story

Thank you for visiting my donation page!

What is Warwick in Africa?

Warwick in Africa is a program that was established in 2006, in which Warwick student volunteers travel to Africa for six weeks and collaborate with teachers to co-deliver fun and effective maths and English lessons. It is wholly supported by donations and contributions of time, money, and gifts. The main idea behind WiA is "Good learning comes from good teaching". We hope to enhance the quality of education by working with African lead teachers, sharing ideas and cultures, and actively participating in school life. Through this we hope to inspire and motivate students.

I am planning on teaching maths to students in the summer of 2023, hoping to inspire the future generation of mathematicians, engineers, and other professionals. Personally, I am taking part in this program because I enjoy teaching and seeing the light bulb moment when a student grasps a difficult concept, I also believe that a good education is required for a society to thrive. I hope to create a positive and lasting impact on the students I teach and help them reach their full potential and pursue their dreams. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to learn from the students and teachers in Africa and to immerse myself in their rich culture, eagerly awaiting the chance to contribute my skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on these communities, and to build lasting relationships that foster mutual respect and understanding.

Why Warwick in Africa?

Only one in every four children of children of secondary school age attends school, and for those who do attend, getting a good education is still a huge challenge, let alone getting into higher education or getting a decent job. WiA has identified that maths and English are powerful liberators from poverty and vital in reaching developmental goals. WiA provides teacher coaches, student volunteer teachers and vital school resources to support and enrichen education in Africa.

Through the program's efforts, students have gained access to a better quality of education and have gone on to pursue higher education or secure good jobs. WiA's impact extends far beyond the classroom, as the program fosters mutual respect and understanding between volunteers and local communities, creating lasting relationships that promote cultural exchange and social progress.

What will my donation be used for?

Your donations will be used to train teachers, send student volunteer teachers and provide educational resources in Africa.

£10 will teach one child for a whole month through this program.

£150 could pay for a school resource grant, allowing to buy whatever will make a real difference in that school, from a new chalkboard, or sports equipment to a carpenter to fix wobbly tables.

£3500 could pay all the costs to send a Student Volunteer Teacher to Africa for 6 weeks, where, during this time they will teach up to 240 individual learners. That’s just £117 per each teaching day.
