help us run a mile
The 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment will attempt to complete the 24000 mile distance around the world in 2 weeks whilst on deployment in Afghanistan, raising money for the Royal British Legion and the Mercian Benevolent Fund.
Beginning on the 11 November soldiers of the Transitional Support Unit (TSU), based in Nad-e-Ali comprising of Mercians, Ghurkha’s, Royal Artillery, Engineers, Logisticians, Medics and Military Police to name a few, will lead in driving this huge challenge of running, rowing or cycling the 24,901.5 miles covering the distance around the earth’s equator.
The Poppy Appeal is the Legion's major fundraising campaign, raising £40 million in 2011, but they need to raise money all year for our vital work helping the whole Armed Forces family. On Remembrance Sunday, we stop for 1 minute, in 1 hour of 1 day to remember and respect those that gave their lives for us. The Legion provides practical care, advice and support to serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans of all ages and their families for every hour of every day, 365 days of every year. Soldiers are always keen to support whenever they can, what better way than standing shoulder to shoulder with all who serve.
Cpl Mark Tonner a serving soldier of the 1 MERCIAN is coordinating the mileage of our Rear Operations Group based in Marne Barracks, Catterick. Mark recently walked with his comrades 154 miles from Catterick Garrison to Chester in just over 3 days, he was seriously injured in 2010 and is now unable to deploy, determined to do his bit, he will be covering the length and breadth of the county encouraging the MERCIAN extended family, friends, support groups and schools to get involved in this fantastic challenge. We need your mileage too……
“Making Miles Matter” is set to encourage those who want to support our veterans to get out and complete the mileage with our soldiers. It can be done in many ways, you can follow the progress of the challenge on the internet and add your mileage to the total as you complete it or you can attend one of the organised group runs happening in your area through the fortnight 11- 24 November.
“It is not going to be easy at all; every soldier deployed has an important job to do, chipping away at the mileage will be tough, we will take advantage of the cooling temperatures. It is only right that we do our bit for this fantastic charity. Soldiers keep extremely fit during tour, we will concentrate our efforts in cracking the mileage and it will be measured over a 2 week period. Soldiers will complete the challenge from Forward Operating Bases around our area and competed distances will be recorded on the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment face-book site, daily…. in fact a daily total will be published using various media channels. Linking with supporters and runners in the county is important and essential if we are going to pass the challenge” said Captain John Elms.
It is easy to let us know your intention to support by messaging the battalion group page above or by making a donation via the Legions justgiving link………..
“We are going to need help, we encourage anyone that can assist us to come along and complete the mileage and help us reach our total or beyond, pledge sponsorship in support of a soldier you know completing the challenge in his / her operating base. Your support is critical to the success of our campaign. Get involved and help us make a difference to the lives of the Armed Forces community” said Mark.
