Exeter Synagogue restoration project to begin

Exeter Synagogue plans to officially celebrate its 250th anniversary in July

Restoration of one of Britain's oldest synagogues will begin in March.

The roof of Exeter Synagogue, which celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, will be replaced in the project.

The work will cost about £118,000 and will include repairing one of the walls which has suffered from damp, said a synagogue spokeswoman. She said that the money would come from fundraising and from a bequest and the work was expected to be completed by the end of June.

"It's a community that's grown over the years and we have members in Devon, Somerset and west Dorset," she said. "It [the building] has deteriorated with age."
