Story
I am raising money for Restless Development, a charity at the forefront of youth-led international development. Since 1985, they have worked with young people in the UK and abroad to identify and improve some of the major issues faced by the developing world. In this time, Restless Development programmes have reached over 7 million young people.
I believe the work they do, and international development in general, is incredibly important. Your place of birth should not dictate your chances in life, for success or even merely for survival, but it does. Many of us are lucky; born into a country with free healthcare, free education, and stringent child labour laws. Many can take for granted the electricity and running water in our homes and the food on our plates. This is not the case for many areas in which Restless Development work.
I have been lucky enough to be accepted as Team Leader onto a placement they are running and will be working to improve health education and livelihoods of communities in South India for six months. This means helping to educate local communities about health and hygiene issues, and helping to improve the job prospects and consequently the economies of rural communities.
This is not going to be easy, we will be living in relatively basic conditions (although by no means as basic as many who live in India as we will have access to running water), and as Team Leader I will be responsible for the projects we are carrying out and to an extent the welfare of the group. However, I am incredibly excited about this opportunity and would really appreciate it if you could help me reach my fundraising objective of £800. As Tesco says, every little helps; if you donate just one or two pounds I would greatly appreciate it.
Although I am required to fundraise this money in order to participate in the programme, I want to make it clear that any money I raise does not go towards me, my expenses or my trip in general. It goes to the charity Restless Development whose work I believe is really worthwhile. If you want to find out more about them, please visit this website: http://www.restlessdevelopment.org/
