Story
On 10 August, with my daughter Hannah as an expert guide, I started cycling from Land's End to John o'Groats (1000 miles), to celebrate birthdays and to raise funds for the British Academy. We celebrated Hannah's 40th birthday en route on 18 August, and my 70th on 29 August at John o'Groats. Then we went on to Orkney. 110 years between us! We reported our progress on LE JoG Blog on the British Academy website. An edited and illustrated version (available as a pdf file) forms the concluding item in The British Academy Review, no. 16.
We set a modest target of raising at least £2,000 -- £2 for each pleasurable and punishing mile! Actually we reached this target on Day 1 of the ride, but we always hoped to exceed this target comfortably. All the money will be used in a good cause. Your contribution will help maintain the Academy's independence, its capacity to act and its support for younger scholars at a time of cuts. So go on, support us to the tune of at least a penny a mile!
