Story
My daughter, Jemima has Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. She can't talk and has difficulty expressing herself, one of the biggest worries for our family is never knowing whether Jemima is being cared for properly. All too often care homes rely on staff who are poorly trained and poorly paid. High turnover rates and use of agencies mean that Jemima is often left with people who don't know her or how to care for her, let alone how they can interact and enjoy their time with her. They are given long, dense documents to read about Jemima which sit gathering dust...
That's why we are creating an interactive E-Book to help induct new and temporary staff. The e-book is like a website on an iPad that uses video, photos and text to help people understand who Jemima is and how to care for her. The e-book will give Jemima an authentic voice to help new staff see her as real person rather than just a long shift to get through.
We've spent time working with her carers friends and family to distill Jemima's personality and express her likes and dislikes - everything from how to help her take her medicine to her passion for rock and roll, salted snacks and shandy!
The e-book is live resource that is easy to edit so that it can change and grow with Jemima over time. We also want other families to benefit from what we are doing so we are using Jemima’s E:book as a pilot to demonstrate to Mencap how it can be rolled out to all the people in Jemima’s home and hopefully beyond.
