2YoungLives is a mentoring scheme for pregnant girls in Sierra Leone, one of the most dangerous places to give birth. Supported by local mentors, girls and their babies can thrive, not just survive childbirth.

Story

At 16 Eisha* became pregnant, and she was rejected, thrown out by her parents, and had to leave school. The situation was hopeless, until she encountered 2YoungLives (2YL). Her mentor gave her words of encouragement and hope, and they shared their story, and those of others who have gone through teenage pregnancy. A small loan and support allowed Eisha to start a business which made her enough money to eat every day and save, enabling her to take care of herself in pregnancy and prepare for her baby.

Family is important to her and 2YL helped her reconcile with her family. Now growing in confidence, she is providing for herself and her baby, returning to school, with her parents support, and is getting alongside other pregnant teenagers.

Sadly, Eisha's story isn't unusual, BUT she's not a statistic and she doesn't want you to feel sorry for her. INSTEAD, be proud of her, of her achievements, of her strength in taking up the challenge to be a good mother, a provider for her small family - she's a role model, friend and supporter of others...!
