Story

10K A Day Challenge

We are inviting you to take part in our 10K-A-DAY CHALLENGE to help raise funds and awareness to support local people with cancer and their families.

This challenge has been inspired by one of Friends of the Cancer Centre's volunteers, Lynn Whan (pictured above). As a long-term supporter, Lynn understands the impact that Covid-19 is having on our fundraising, while knowing that people with cancer really need our support more than ever. So she has taken on the personal challenge of walking or cycling 10K a day during July and is inviting you to get involved too. Lynn explains why it is so important to help Friends of the Cancer Centre :

"I volunteer for Friends of the Cancer Centre because my family and I have experienced the generosity of this fantastic charity during my parents journey through cancer treatment.  From the little cups of tea or coffee in the Bridgewater Suite, magazines to read while waiting on appointments or visiting, through to the support of Laura Croan the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Lymphona who was with my dad every step of the way. The charity really does make a big difference !

My volunteer role with the charity involves fundraising through a corporate partnership within my workplace, working with colleagues to organise fundraising events and awareness activities for the employees. I am also Chairperson of the Dromore Fundraising Support Group and we run community fundraising events and street collections in the Dromore, County Down area."

I know that Covid-19 has affected the charity as many events have had to be postponed or cancelled. I also know that local people impacted by cancer still really need our help. So I am going to step up my commitment by taking part in the ‘10K-A-DAY CHALLENGE' throughout July. I enjoy cycling and walking and these are things that I can still do whilst social distancing is in place during this phase of lockdown. I hope many more people will join me and raise awareness and funds for this fantastic local charity."
