Story
I started to ‘run’ In September 2018 after ‘inadvertently’ agreeing to complete the Bath Half Marathon in March 2019. I’ve never been sporty and at 51 years this was amusing to family. I trained hard through the winter around the streets of the Forest of Dean, no significant injuries just a realisation that I wasn’t going to be fast.
A few weeks after completing the Bath half marathon I watched the London Marathon and thought I’d love to complete - What a sense of achievement that would bring. At a similar time I found out my home Church (Corps) in Falmouth had a building fund to raise £50k and I knew then that I wanted to support them by completing the London marathon.
I grew up in Falmouth and went to Sunday School at the Salvation Army. This was the start of a significant journey for me. Our family life was chaotic and the church cared for us in many ways. I can truly say for me I would not be where and who I am now without those faithful Christian people. They continue to impact so many people within the community.
The Salvation Army in Falmouth is a church in community for the community, which has a real passion for putting FAITH INTO ACTION. In various ways they serve people from all parts of the community 7 days a week. This includes supporting our Kidz Klub, charity shop, café, lunch club and emergency assistance provision. Their assistance seeks to support people materially, emotionally, relationally and spiritually with a real heart of love and compassion for all. However, the outreach is not only through their weekly mission programmes, but by also being present in the town centre, making presentations to local community groups and through social media - which includes a Facebook following of over 1,700. The church building is now starting to look a little weary and is in need of refurbishment both internally and externally to better serve the community. They are therefore in the process of raising funds to support the refurbishment. They are committed to raising £50,000 and very much grateful to every donor and fundraiser as they seek to meet their target. ’
I would like to raise funds to say thank you and help put back into my childhood community so that other children, young people, adults and older folk get a chance to experience the love and support from the Salvation Army. So many more lives can be positively impacted if Falmouth are able to proceed with their plans.
I also want to raise funds to support the national and international work being done by The Salvation Army in the area of Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery.
I want to play a part in putting a stop to slavery happening and helping survivors of this terrible crime.
Since 2011, The Salvation Army and it’s partners have supported thousands of victims of modern slavery from more than 90 countries.
This is happening now in our towns, communities even our streets. It affects all ages from children to grown adults. Please help me support those working to end this modern day slavery.
Thank you for your support. Every penny will make a difference. Lynn
