Story

Like most people I had never heard of Guillain-Barrè Syndrome until my dad had it in 2015-2016. It is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the body and causes paralysis. Only 1 or 2 people in every 100,000 are affected but the affects can last years. My dad spent 163 days in ICU completely paralysed and on a ventilator then 7 months in neuro-rehab learning to do everything again. He's lucky as he made a full recovery but some people are left with varying degrees of disability from wheelchair dependence to near complete paralysis. Due to my dad's long stay in hospital we met a lot of doctors, nurses, physios and many other NHS staff, we can never thank them enough and their dedication is being tested to the limit right now, we knew back in 2015 how special they are and what fantastic work they do. To help protect the NHS and follow lockdown rules I will be cycling locally (a 5 mile circuit) but clocking up as many miles as I can each day by doing laps - current best is 6 laps = 30 miles.
