Story
Hello! I discovered the Magnolia cup through my company, Markel, who sponsor the event because it aligns well with our culture of giving back to communities and supporting diversity.
When I read more about the cup’s mission to uplift women and support a worthy cause, I was inspired to volunteer too!
This year the Magnolia cup is supporting a fantastic cause…the education of girls in Malawi.
The current situation in Malawi is stark; only 13% of girls manage to complete upper secondary school, a figure that distressingly dips to 2% among the most disadvantaged. Moreover, 42% of girls are married before they turn 18, and 9% before the age of 15.
The project that we are supporting aims to keep primary aged girls in school by providing school materials, improving facilities and strengthening the mentor network. By promoting education, we're offering these girls a brighter future, battling poverty, and kickstarting lasting changes that will reverberate across generations—a virtuous cycle.
As someone who has been empowered by education, I feel a responsibility to ensure others get that same opportunity - this has been extremely motivating for me as I have embarked on my horse riding journey.
Now speaking of horse riding….I could barely ride a horse at the beginning of the year. But coming in as a fit person (I completed an Ironman and finished the Marathon des Sables), I thought it would be ok.
How wrong was I! This has been the hardest challenge. It has not just been about fitness…but balance, flexibility and understanding the horse. There have been ups and downs (literally), and there have been many times when I have been overcome with self doubt.
But thanks to the stream of support from so many, I am still pushing on for August! In particular, I would like to thank Kim and Nigel Tinkler at Woodland Stables, Markel, Goodwood, Talland school of equitation, Lacy’s cottage riding school, and Education Above All.
Although my journey to be a jockey has been tough, it's nothing compared to the daily challenges the girls in Malawi face. I kindly ask for your support for this remarkable initiative. Please sponsor me and share this page. Every contribution, whether it equates to a couple of cups of coffee or a celebratory dinner out, could help turn the tide for these girls.
Thank you!
