Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!
My name is Lydia Baxter I am 21 years old and a first year student at Nottingham Trent University studying Wildlife Conservation.
Earlier this year I was thinking about raising money for a charity and started to look into mental health more, as many friends and family members of mine either struggle with, or have struggled in the past, with depression and other mental health conditions. Sadly I personally know of young people who have taken their own lives and I feel as though if I can help in some way then there's no reason why I shouldn't. Everyone deserves to be happy and to have the support they need given to them with ease. Many of us have no idea how we can help those around us who are struggling with these issues and the charity I have chosen not only helps those in need but those of us who would like to do more to help.
Suicide is the biggest killer of young people – male and female – under 35 in the UK. In 2015, 1,659 young people took their own lives. That equates to over four per day. Every year many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.
The charity I'm raising money for draws from the experience of many who have been touched personally by young suicide across the UK and speak on their behalf in their campaigns and in their endeavours to save young lives. Together they believe that with appropriate support and education, many young suicides can be prevented.
PAPYRUS deliver awareness and prevention training, provide confidential support and suicide intervention through HOPELineUK, campaign and influence national policy, and empower young people to lead suicide prevention activities in their own communities.
I'm going to be walking 72km over a period of 6 days on the Great Wall of China y raising money for this charity, or just taking the time to educate yourself on how to help someone who is going through a hard time, you may save a life.
