Story
Welcome to my page for my 2018 London Marathon & Connors 100 Car Challenge
I set this page up as I wanted to do some good and raise some money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. I am sure many people can all relate to knowing someone personally being affected by cancer either it be family or friend. This became reality for me just over 5 years ago when my brother Connor, only 19 at the time, found out he had osteosarcoma cancer.
Connor's Story:
It started with tumours in his left leg and eventually found its way to his lungs. He underwent several surgeries. Due to this he lost several bones in left leg and his entire left lung. He continued to have countless cycles of chemotherapy last couple years to battle tumours in his remaining lung but unfortunately was told the tumours are growing at a rate faster than chemotherapy treatment can stop, then making the cancer terminal. He had then been having chemo to slow the growth of tumours, enduring all the sickness and side affects to only find out (start of October 2017) chemo is doing nothing. His breathing was then affected, reducing his mobility and ability to do some things. Going forward chemo stopped and unfortunately there was no treatment. Oxygen was supplied when his lung could not cope without aid. Its no-ones fault, the hospitals and doctors/nurses had done everything they do but eventually you have to admit when nothing more they can do. Connor couldn’t have asked for better support and treatment from the staff on YPU Ward at Queen Elizabeth Birmingham which is a Teenage Cancer Trust sponsored ward. Unfortunately Connor sadly passed away January 26th 2018 after a long and courageous battle.
While he was still with us he decided to enjoy himself and do something to give back to those that supported him and many others. To have some fun and raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust, Connor undertook his 100 car challenge on Facebook. He had always been a petrolhead and had owned and worked on many cars from Modified sports cars, classic cars and some motorbikes. His aim was to have a passenger ride or drive's in as many different vehicles as possible. for every vehicle he went in he donated £5 in the car owners name to TCT through this page. Before he passed he managed to complete 77 cars and donated £385 himself accordingly. During that time there was many donations by the vehicle owners themselves and many people who loved his story and what he was doing after it was publicly shared virally on Facebook. He was amazed by the response he got and all the kind people offering a ride/drive or just a nice comment and donation.
Luke Running:
In order to say thank you for everything they have done for Connor and help them carry on with the great service they provide I decided I wanted to do something too. Because of this I decided to go for it and apply for the London marathon. Lucky for me The Teenage Cancer Trust offered me a place on #teamlegend, the squad running on behalf of teenage cancer trust. I have committed to raise £2000 by accepting a charity spot. A training plan was put in place and training on-going. Leading up to the marathon and having not ran a marathon before, I plan to do many practice runs/races slowly building up the distance. Here is the list of races I have booked currently:
- 12/11/17 – Coalville 10k
- 19/11/17 – Coventry 10k
- 26/11/17 – Coombe 8
- 17/12/17 – Draycote Water Santa Dash 10k
- 14/01/18 – Draycote Water 10k
- 11/02/18 – Leicestershire Half Marathon
- 04/03/18 – Ashbourne 10mile
- 18/03/18 – Coventry Half Marathon
- 22/04/18 – London Marathon
Since Connor was unable to see me complete the marathon , I will be running in memory of him.
I will keep this page open up till the 20/05/18 then the money has to be sent into the Teenage Cancer Trust by the 25/05/18.
