Story
I am running the 2022 London Marathon to raise money for Macmillan, helping those fighting cancer and offering support to their families.
Those who know me will know I came to running quite late, but threw myself into it over the past couple of years. 5ks and Park Runs are easily doable; a 10k is a good effort; I've gotten to a half marathon distance twice. But a marathon... it's a lot!
But I'm eager to take on the challenge to help raise as much money as possible for Macmillan, all in memory of my amazing Mum, Angela.
My Mum was a remarkable human being, working as a nurse for more than 30 years and dedicating herself to improving the lives of others. She was a wonderful mother, a friend to so many, and made an enormous impact on the lives of all she met.
After a long battle with cancer, Mum passed away last August at the age of 58.
Through the darkest and most difficult times, Macmillan were there to offer an incredible amount of support to Mum, doing all they could to ensure her final months were as comfortable as possible. Macmillan nurses were essential to her care, and also a source of comfort to me and those close to her, knowing she was in the best possible hands.
Having seen just how important Macmillan's support is to those fighting cancer, I'm eager to try and raise as much as I can. Cancer is something that will impact 1 in 2 of us during our lives, making it essential charities like Macmillan can aid as many people as possible.
You can make donations through this Just Giving page. I've set a target of £2,500 which is ambitious, but would go a long way to helping those fighting cancer and their families!
I'll be posting updates here and on social media about training and my efforts to get ready for race day. Expect to see a lot of Formula 1 track runs from around the world in the coming months!
Thank you for your donations and the support for this. It's all fairly daunting, but I'm excited to take part in one of the most famous races in the world for an incredible cause.
At first, Mum was a bit sceptical about me taking up running as a hobby, saying after one of my earliest efforts: "You're not going to run a marathon or something, are you?" - I told her: "Maybe one day."
To do so raising money in her memory will be a fitting way to do it.
