Story
Hi, I am a second-year dental student at the University of Sheffield.
Over 1,700 elderly people in Sheffield are supported by St Luke's Hospice, and that figure is tripled when considering family members and carers involved in their care.
St Luke's provides a high standard of end-of-life and palliative care and strives to support their patients in maintaining as high a quality of life as possible at a very difficult time in their lives as they are fighting with terminal illness. Only 30% of their funding comes from the NHS, and this year they will need to raise more than £7 million. They are a registered charity and all of their services are free of charge for patients and their families.
St Luke’s works constantly with the NHS, local care homes and council departments to further develop exactly the range of care and support services that all people with terminal conditions need and deserve. All of their medical and nursing care is planned and provided by a highly-qualified, specialist team of medical consultants, specialist registrars, doctors and nurses with particular expertise in symptoms associated with life-limiting conditions. They can provide integrated care to patients staying in the centre, or those who are being looked after in their own home. The range of therapies and actives offered to their patients can include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social care, wellbeing services, as well as guidance on managing medicines. I am running the Sheffield Half Marathon on March 26th 2023 to raise funds for this worthwhile cause.
