Story
Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have been ‘lucky’ - or ‘unlucky’, depends how you look at it! - enough to gain a place in the 2017 Virgin London Marathon and will be running on behalf of the charity Walk the Walk.
Having completed Walk the Walk’s ‘Moonwalk’ back in 2015, I am already vaguely familiar with the 26.2 mile loop of London’s top attractions and sites, however, this time I have pledged to run for the charity.
For those of you who have ran just a few miles you will know that 26.2 miles is certainly no joke and, now that we are in January, it’s starting to feel very real. Having recently ran up to 10 miles in my training, I think it’s fair to say I underestimated the extent of running the full marathon
distance, and nothing other than ‘terrified’ can describe how I feel about what is to come in April.
However, I am not just running for pleasure (I’ve heard that’s
what some people call it…). In June 2014, I lost my mum to breast cancer. Anyone who has ever lost anyone close to them will understand what a heart-breaking and surreal experience it really is. Although there are no words that can truly sum up the bond I had with my mum, it was certainly very special, and something I miss daily.
Whilst I joke about the pain of running 26.2 miles, it’s certainly nothing in comparison to what my mum, and millions of other women around the world suffering with breast cancer have to endure. In the UK alone,
1 in 8 women are likely to develop breast cancer during their lifetime. However, survival rates are at an all-time high, owing largely to the phenomenal work of charities such as Walk the Walk.
Walk the Walk are the UK’s largest grant making charity, they raise millions each year which is then awarded to other charities to fund
life-saving research into the prevention of breast cancer amongst men and women. More about the charity can be found here: https://walkthewalk.org/about-us/
Any donation, no matter how small it may seem, will be much appreciated, and a huge thank you to all those who have already donated.
Much love,
Luke
