Bupa Great Birmingham Run 2013 · 20 October 2013 ·
I initially decided to take part in the run as a motivation to get fit, eventually choosing BCH as a charity because I know first hand of the quality of staff and care at the hospital. Although Siobhan often adopts the wait and see approach when I'm under the weather I can tell that she's passionate about her work as a nurse and the hospital in general
It took me a while to register for the run and it wasn't really until I found out about Seb that I pulled my finger out (for those of you that aren't aware my colleague's son was recently diagnosed with Leukemia).
After being awarded World's Greatest Dad two years in a row it's easy to forget that I haven't been doing it for very long and something like cancer hitting so close to home really brings it into perspective (those of you that doubt these accolades ask yourself this, how could a six month old even comprehend forging a certificate, let alone go through with it, he couldn't could he?).
I've decided to concentrate my fundraising to the Childrens Cancer Centre Appeal (http://www.bch.org.uk/cancer_appeal.php) it's a really good cause and I emplore you to pull your finger out and do what you can. It's easy to forget how something like cancer affects both patients and families on a daily basis, the improvements to the cancer facilities will make a huge difference to the hospital experience. Nobody likes going to hospital at the best of times and it's a much worse situation for young children that often don't fully understand what's happening and at times have to spend a long time staying there, the improvements to the cancer ward will not only improve the treatment of patients but will also create a more homely and .welcoming environment for them.
Those of you that have done something like this before will know what we're going through, it's hard work and it's often difficult to find the motivation. Those of you who've never gone running regularly get yourself out there, I used to hate cardio but once I got started I realised that as hard as it can be at the same time it's very rewarding and you don't need to do much before you start to see results.
